New Year, New Mindset: Affirmations for MG Triumphs

As the calendar turns and we welcome the promise of a new year, individuals living with myasthenia gravis (MG) find themselves at a unique crossroads—a moment to reflect on the challenges overcome and an opportunity to set intentions for the future. Generally speaking, I am not a fan of the traditional "new year, new me" style resolutions that are quickly discarded by mid-March at best (if they make it that long).

With that in mind, as I write this first blog post of the new year, let's delve into the empowering realm of affirmations versus traditional resolutions, offering insights tailored to the distinctive journey of those navigating life with MG.

The Power of Affirmations

Affirmations are more than just positive statements; they are powerful tools for cultivating a resilient mindset and promoting overall well-being. In the context of MG, affirmations can be transformative, offering a mental and emotional anchor in the face of daily challenges.

Myasthenia Gravis-Focused Affirmations:

  1. I Am Resilient: Recognize and affirm the strength within you to face the unique challenges posed by MG.

  2. I Embrace Each Victory: Celebrate the small wins, acknowledging and appreciating the progress made, no matter how incremental.

  3. My Health is a Priority: Affirm your commitment to self-care, recognizing the importance of rest, nourishment, and stress management in managing MG.

  4. I Am Supported: Acknowledge the strength of your support network, whether it be friends, family, or the MG community.

Resolutions: A Shift in Perspective

Traditional resolutions often come laden with expectations and a focus on specific outcomes. For individuals managing MG, redefining resolutions to be more flexible and mindful can make the process not only achievable but also empowering.

MG-Inclusive Resolutions:

  1. Prioritize Self-Care: Set a resolution to prioritize your health by committing to regular check-ups, maintaining a balanced diet, and incorporating gentle exercises like restorative yoga or tai chi.

  2. Create Realistic Milestones: Instead of setting grandiose goals, break them down into smaller, manageable steps. This could involve pacing activities, setting realistic energy limits, and adjusting expectations as needed.

  3. Cultivate Mindfulness: Integrate mindfulness practices into your routine, such as meditation or restorative breathing exercises, to foster mental well-being and effective stress management.

Finding Balance

Affirmations and resolutions need not be mutually exclusive. In fact, when paired together, they create a holistic approach to navigating the new year. By acknowledging your strengths, embracing positive affirmations, and setting mindful resolutions, you cultivate a mindset of resilience and empowerment.

Celebrating Progress

As we embark on the journey ahead, it's crucial to celebrate progress, no matter how small. Each step forward, each act of self-compassion, contributes to the collective resilience of the MG community.

In the coming year, let's champion the power of affirmations and resolutions thoughtfully tailored to the distinctive journey of living with MG. Through the cultivation of a positive mindset, the setting of realistic intentions, and the unwavering support of a community, we empower ourselves to face the challenges ahead with resilience, hope, and an unshakeable sense of strength. Here's to a year of growth, celebration, and the fortitude to meet whatever comes our way!
